Remarks
Linnaeus (1758) also referred to Gronovius' (1756: 42) very detailed description of 'Acipenser corpore tuberculis spinosis aspero'. An Acipenser sturio specimen from the Gronovius collection is still preserved, BMNH 1853.11.12:210, and it may also have syntype status, but Wheeler (1958: 296) expressed doubt about the identity of the preserved specimen (496 mm) with the one so meticulously described, and it would indeed seem like that dissection must have been destructive. Referring to incomplete curatorial record of the NRM specimen, Fernholm & Wheeler (1983: 209) expressed doubt about its status as coming from the Museum Adolphi Friderici, but it is now confirmed as listed in the 1808 catalogue, and thus has a continuous record suggesting that it is a syntype of A. sturio .
