Recognized as only surviving syntype specimen of Squalus zygaena by Fernholm & Wheeler (1983: 208).

Linnaeus (1758) described Squalus zygaena with references to several literature sources, including his own treatise in Museum Adolphi Friderici of 1754. No specimens are known to exist from any of the other descriptions.
