Remarks
In his description of Labrus bimaculatus, Linnaeus (1758) referred only to his own "Sciaena bimaculata" (Linnaeus, 1754). The specimen certainly did not come from the Mediterranean Sea, but represents a species recorded from freshwaters in the Guianas, South America. See Kullander (1983) for recent revision. Opinion 1954 recognises the specimen as the holotype of Labrus bimaculatus.
